Flip the numbers and practice counting up to twelve
For all ages: Shut the Box is a fun dice game that playfully practices math. It combines concentration, strategy, and simple math problems, while teaching children how to plan and make choices.
At the start of the game, all numbers from 1 to 10 are facing up. The goal is to turn over as many numbers as possible. Then, two dice are rolled. For example, if a 3 and a 6 are rolled, the following combinations may be turned over:
- 9 of
- 8 and 1 or
- 7 and 2 or
- 6 and 3 or
- 5 and 4

Only one or two numbers may be turned over each turn. The player continues to roll until all numbers are turned over or no more possibilities remain.
Afterward, the remaining numbers can be added up and recorded. This creates a playful competition: the winner is the one with the fewest open numbers or the lowest score.
