When children are undergoing treatment in the hospital, it can be difficult to distract them or keep them relaxed. This can be a stressful time for both the child and the parents. That's why I've developed hospital sets with distraction and relaxation materials specifically for patients in the pediatric ward or pediatric outpatient clinic. In this blog post, you'll read how these sets can help children express their feelings and relax while being distracted during treatments.

Contents and purpose of a distraction set

Sometimes the power lies in something small that gently shifts the focus.

The basic set includes two essential tools: the magic wand and the balance finger bird. Both provide different support during stressful moments, such as injections or medical procedures.

The wand acts as a visual resting point. As the stars and glitter slowly glide down, the eye automatically follows the movement. This gentle, predictable flow helps calm the nervous system. By shifting the focus to what the eye sees, tension in the body decreases. It's an accessible visual distraction that can provide safety and control.

The balance finger bird offers a targeted sensory stimulation. The bird sits on the finger of the hand not being pricked. The light, punctuated pressure of the beak on the skin creates a distinct, tactile sensation. By looking at the bird and feeling the pressure, attention shifts from the other arm. This combination of seeing and feeling supports attention shifting and helps with emotion regulation.
At a hospital that tested the kits, the birds proved to be a hit at the blood collection clinic: "The finger birds are often used for blood draws in the hospital. Because the child is so focused on one hand, the other arm can be used."

Additional products in the distraction sets

By gently blowing, the blades begin to move, immediately shifting your attention to the rotation. This simple act—inhale, exhale, and look—helps regulate tension. The rhythmic movement of the blades gives the eye something to follow, while the blowing invites the body to breathe more calmly. This creates focus, distraction, and a sense of control in the moment in an accessible way.

The gyro spinning top works as a focused and active form of distraction. Controlled blowing sets the spinning top in motion—and for older children, this requires a bit more technique and control. This challenge shifts their attention entirely to spinning, maintaining the speed, and maintaining balance. It requires concentration, breath regulation, and perseverance. As the eye follows the spinning motion, tension or discomfort is removed. In this way, the spinning top offers not only visual distraction but also a sense of control and achievement.

Chain links are simple, tactile toys that keep children occupied and stimulate their senses. Even the youngest children can easily hold them. The links can be attached to each other, but also to a hospital bed, for example. Unfastening them is quite a challenge for little hands, and the perfect distraction. "I always have a few links with me. They're so handy for quickly putting something in children's hands to play with. But also for attaching things to something. I wouldn't want to be without them."

This set of four emotion sensory bottles helps children become aware of and express their emotions. Whether they're happy, sad, scared, or angry, these charming bottles help children practice self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness. The child-resistant bottles are permanently sealed and easy for little hands to grasp and operate. Each bottle is printed with a facial expression and filled with liquid and material to create a flowing action that represents the emotion.

A kneadable ball is a simple yet powerful way to regulate tension during a tense moment. By consciously squeezing, rolling, or kneading, the focus shifts from what's happening to what the body feels. This focused action helps interrupt thoughts and shift focus. Repeatedly squeezing the ball applies deep pressure to the palms. This proprioceptive input—the stimuli from muscles and joints—supports the body in processing tension. This deep pressure organizes the nervous system and can help reduce anxiety. In this way, a kneadable ball offers not only physical release but also a sense of control. It's an accessible tool that actively engages children in their own self-regulation and helps them better cope with a treatment or tense moment.

A lava runner, helix timer, or hourglass can be a powerful visual anchor when a child needs to sit still. The flowing movement of falling drops, spinning spirals, or flowing sand automatically captures attention. The eye follows what moves—and that's precisely where the focus shifts. When the gaze follows the calm, predictable movement, the nervous system receives a clear and concise stimulus pattern. This helps regulate tension and reduces the tendency to move out of restlessness. The child doesn't have to do anything, just watch. This form of visual distraction is accessible and effective, especially during medical procedures or other situations where sitting still is important. Attention shifts from the tense moment to the rhythm of the movement, creating a sense of calm and control.

Distraction and relaxation during medical procedures

Research shows that tension, anxiety, and pain can be reduced when children are purposefully distracted and helped to relax. Especially in young patients, anxiety about treatment often exacerbates the perception of pain. Anxiety and pain then intertwine, causing the body to react with increased alertness and tension.

When a child can shift their attention to something soothing or engaging during a session, the experience changes noticeably. By focusing on a visual stimulus, a breathing activity, or a simple gesture, the nervous system is given the opportunity to calm down. This leads to greater relaxation in the body and a more positive experience of the moment.

Our carefully curated distraction and relaxation kits for hospital use support healthcare professionals in this regard. They offer accessible materials that help regulate tension, foster a sense of control, and make treatment less stressful for the child.

Essential material for every children's ward or children's clinic

A versatile selection of distraction and relaxation materials for young patients is helpful to have on hand. Using these materials helps children relax, distract themselves during treatments, and better regulate and express their emotions. This gives them a more positive hospital experience.

Custom-made distraction sets

The sample sets have been carefully compiled and provide a good overview of the possibilities. At the same time, I understand that every department, target group, and situation is unique. Therefore, the sets can always be customized in terms of content and quantity.

Whether it's for a specific age group, a specific type of treatment, or a preference for visual, tactile, or breathing-focused materials, I'm happy to help. Together, we'll create a set that aligns with your practice, working methods, and needs. This creates a distraction package that truly supports your work environment and is appropriate for the children you serve.

The hospitals that tested the sets quickly found them indispensable. Are you excited too? Contact us at info@toys42hands.nl for more information about our distraction and relaxation sets for children in hospitals.
